PORTLAND — A passenger seriously injured in a crash that killed a Vassalboro man over the weekend continues to recover at a city hospital.

James Ronco, 24, was listed in satisfactory condition Monday at Maine Medical Center, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Ronco was taken to the hospital early Sunday morning after the car in which he was a passenger crashed into a gravel pile on Commercial Street.

Portland police said the driver, Robert J. Hubbard, 23, of Vassalboro, was killed in the crash, which occurred around 1:30 a.m. Sunday.

Ronco was initially listed in serious condition at the hospital, police said. Ronco’s address was not immediately available from police.

Portland police did not return calls Monday seeking additional comment on the case.

Hubbard was operating a 2008 Honda Civic westbound near Beach Street.

Police are investigating why Hubbard lost control of the car. Police have asked anyone with information about the accident to call 874-8532.
