WINTHROP — A local woman was distracted when her car veered onto the wrong side of the road this summer and crashed into a tanker truck on U.S. Route 202, killing her.

But what caused 44-year-old Rosemaire “Rose” Lola to be distracted is unknown, police say.

Winthrop Police Chief Joseph Young said Monday that investigation into the Aug. 3 crash that claimed the life of Lola has been closed.

Young said police still don’t know why Lola’s sport-utility vehicle crashed head-on with a Pat Jackson/TriCity Septic Tank Service tanker truck.

Young said police believe Lola was distracted by something that caused her to veer into the oncoming lane and into the path of the truck; however, they don’t know what caused that distraction.

“We are not able to determine why (Lola) was on the wrong side of the road,” Young said. “We just know she was on the wrong side of the road.”

The truck driver, George Savage, 74, of Sidney, was injured and taken to the hospital.

Pat Jackson owner Pauline Dube did not return a call seeking comment.

The crash occurred just after 2 p.m. Aug. 3 near the East Winthrop post office. Lola was driving a black 2002 Chevrolet Blazer wet when she crossed the centerline and hit the east-bound 2006 Peterbilt.

The truck ended up on its side sprawled across Route 202. Both vehicles were destroyed.
