Born into a Republican family, I cast my first presidential vote for Ike in 1952. I ran for political office in Somerset County as a Republican in 1962 and in 1966. I was privileged to campaign with Gov. John Reed and Rep. Cliff McIntyre and Rep. Stan Tupper.

I supported Margaret Chase Smith, Bill Cohen, Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins because they shared my values.

But in 2012, I ended my enrollment in the Republican Party, because I am upset and dismayed at the extreme and unreasonable positions that local and national Republicans have taken. I did not leave my party — it left me.

I support Rep. Jeff McCabe, D-Skowhegan, for re-election to represent House District 85. McCabe shares my values about the need to protect our woods, waters and wildlife and to address the critical environmental issues of our time. I urge voters to vote McCabe.
