HAMPDEN — Racean Wood scored a pair of touchdowns and had an interception, helping No. 6 Waterville take a 25-17 upset win over No. 3 Hampden Academy in the Pine Tree Conference Class B quarterfinals.

Waterville, now 5-4, will host No. 7 Belfast (5-4), which upset No. 2 Leavitt, in the semifinals next Saturday. Hampden ends the season at 7-2.

The Purple Panthers never trailed. Waterville scored on its second play of the game, when Brian Bellows threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to Jordhan Levine on a reverse play. Wood’s 20-yard touchdown run on a sweep gave the Panthers a 12-0 lead.

Wood added a 15-yard touchdown run, and fullback Cam Thomas scored on a 4-yard run for the Panthers.

Wood and Jordan Derosby each had an interception for Waterville. Waterville’s defensive line did a great job controlling the line of scrimmage, head coach Frank Knight said, and that prevented the Broncos from breaking off too many big plays.

“We worked hard with our lineman on just being lower than them. We had guys up front do a good job, and our linebackers and safeties came up. We were stingy,” Knight said.
