LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (AP) — Erin Hamlin has some work to do in her quest for a sixth straight USA Luge women’s national championship.
Augusta native Julia Clukey led Hamlin after the first two races Friday. Clukey’s two-run time was 1 minute, 29.907 seconds, which was 0.143 seconds ahead of Hamlin and 0.276 seconds better than third-place Emily Sweeney.
In the men’s event, Chris Mazdzer moved closer to his fourth straight national crown, his two-run time of 1:46.374 coming in 0.23 seconds ahead of second-place Tucker West. Aiden Kelly was third, nearly a half-second back.
Matt Mortensen and Preston Griffall (1:30.405) lead the doubles over Jake Hyrns and Andrew Sherk (1:30.499) by about a tenth of a second at the midway point. Ty Andersen and Anthony Espinoza are third.
The national championships finish up today.
