LEWISTON — Bates College used a dominant running game to beat rival Colby 31-6 in a college football game on Homecoming at Garcelon Field on Saturday.

Bates quarterback Trevor Smith carried the ball a career-high 30 times for 93 yards and a touchdown. He also completed 10 of 14 passes for 124 yards and a touchdown.

Bates improves to 3-3 with its first win over Colby since 2008 and can win the CBB crown with a win at Bowdoin next Saturday. Colby falls to 1-5.

Justin Ciero completed 18 of 40 passes for 137 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions for Colby.

Brian Gallagher got Bates on the board when he recovered a fumble in the end zone early in the second quarter. Charlie Donahue then kicked a 31-yard field goal to make it 10-0.

Shawn Doherty scored a pair of touchdowns, one in the third quarter and one in the fourth quarter, as the Bobcats pushed their lead to 24-0. Indio Dow then caught a 5-yard TD pass from Ciero for the Mules’ lone score.

Smith capped the scoring with a 2-yard TD run late in the fourth quarter.

Bridgewater State 48, MMA 21: Ben Desmarais rushed for 45 yards and three touchdowns on six carries to lift the Bears in Bridgewater.

Bridgewater State (8-1) led 21-0 at the half and 41-7 after three quarters before Maine Martime Academy (0-8) got its offense going.

Michael Fahay rushed for 85 yards and a touchdown to lead the Mariners. He also completed all three of his passes for 57 yards.

Matt Green had two catches for 69 yards and a touchdown for the Bears as well.

Husson 17, SUNY Maritime 14, OT: Reece Attard kicked a 43-yard field goal in overtime to lift the Eagles to the win in Throggs Neck, N.Y.

Husson, which rallied from a 14-0 halftime deficit, improved to 2-6.

SUNY Maritime had the ball first in overtime but Tyler Trodden fumbled on the 10-yard line, which set up the Eagles.

Kash Keezer threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Devin Sherman in the third before Dom Mowrer picked up a fumble and raced 60 yards for a score to tie the game in the fourth.

Oak Hill graduate Ben Foss had two catches for 33 yards for Husson.

SUNY Maritime dropped to 3-5.

Wesleyan 34, Bowdoin 14: LaDarius Drew rushed for 156 yards and two touchdowns to lead Wesleyan to the New England Small College Athletic Conference victory in Middletown, Conn.

Te’Rhon O’Neal also rushed for an 83-yard touchdown for Wesleyan (5-1), which led just 17-14 at the half.

Zach Donnarumma rushed for 98 yards and a touchdown to lead the Polar Bears (1-5).
