WATERVILLE — Two people were injured Thursday when their SUV struck a tree and rolled onto its side.

Immediate details about the accident were scant.

About 6:30 p.m., a Jeep SUV was traveling north on College Avenue when it swerved off the road and struck a large tree about a mile south of Fairfield. The cause of the crash is under investigation, but police Sgt. William Bonney said there were no signs of skid marks on the road.

A man and a woman, whose names were not released, were taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center, Thayer Campus. Bonney wasn’t certain of their injuries.

One of the two was injured severely enough to warrant a reconstruction of the crash, which will be handled by the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office.

The reconstruction will help investigators determine an approximate speed of the SUV at the moment of impact. Investigators will also determine whether drugs or alcohol were involved, Bonney said.

Northbound traffic on College Avenue was diverted away from the accident site for part of the night.
