BOSTON — Christopher Thurston of Augusta will serve as an AmeriCorps member with City Year helping students in Boston.

Thurston, who recently graduated from the University of Maine, will serve on the CSX team at the Dearborn Middle School. During his 10 months of service, Thurston will support teachers and at-risk students focusing on attendance, behavior and course work by serving as a tutor, mentor and role model.

City Year, an education-focused AmeriCorps program, is addressing the high school dropout crisis by recruiting, training and deploying young adults to help students and schools succeed. In Boston, teams of corps members are serving in 21 schools. Throughout the year, Thurston will receive more than 200 hours of training to prepare him to partner with teachers to improve students’ attendance, behavior and course performance.
