RUMFORD — Lisbon, Monmouth, and Spruce Mountain took the top three spots at the Mountain Valley Conference cheerleading championships, held Saturday morning at Mountain Valley High School.
Libson won with a score of 112.5, followed by Monmouth (97.8), and Spruce Mtn. (96.7). Madison was fourth with 95 points, and Oak Hill was eighth with 64.7.
“(The scores) were low all around,” Monmouth coach Mike Gilbert said. “It was the first time out for most of us.”
Each team performed a “practice,” or penalty round. In that round, the judges gave teams feedback but did not give scores. Part of the feedback was to let the teams know where there would have been deductions if the round had been scored, Gilbert said.
Gilbert said that in the penalty round, one Monmouth cheerleader touched her head to the floor while tumbling, and would have received a five-point deduction. In the second round, she took that move out, and the Mustangs did not receive any deductions.
“She called a smart play,” Gilbert said.
Monmouth placed fourth at last year’s MVCs.
“We’ve come a long way in a week,” Gilbert said. “I was hoping that we would leave here in the top four, and they exceeded our expectations. I think it was a delightful shock for all of us.”
