CANCUN, Mexico — Alex Crisci-Hersom will participate in the 2013 World Cup of Martial Arts held by the World Congress of Martial Arts at the Grand Oasis Sports Center in Cancun.

Crisci-Hersom qualified for a spot on Team USA Karate 2013 at the Kicks USA Nationals Championships held this past May in Maine.

Crisci-Hersom is the son of Master Brent J. Crisci, owner and operator of the United Martial Arts Academies, Augusta, Maine, dojo, who will travel with him and coach him during the three-day event. He will compete in kumite — free fighting and kata — form patterns against teams from Great Britain, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Spain, and four other countries.

Crisci-Hersom, a senior at Whittier Tech High School in Haverhill, Mass., has competed at karate tournaments across Maine and New England since the age of 4. After high school he will attend Army basic training.
