WASHINGTON — Fire crews from five towns went to 634 Old County Road in Washington on Saturday evening to fight a fire that destroyed one section of a home and its contents, Fire Chief Tom Johnston said.

No one was hurt in the fire, which was reported at 6:12 p.m. The cause is under investigation, but is believed to be accidental, Johnston said. The fire started in an area where a wood stove was in use. Johnston estimated the damage at $50,000.

Johnston said the homeowner, who he would not identify, was taking a nap, heard crackling, and woke up to the smell of smoke. He said no working smoke detectors were in the home, adding that if Washington residents need detectors, the Fire Department will provide them and install them.

Firefighters from Union, Somerville, Jefferson and Liberty helped fight the fire in Washington.
