FARMINGTON — Franklin County Soil and Water Conservation District and the Franklin County Farm Bureau will co-sponsor an informational meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, in the Town Office downstairs conference room. The program will feature a Spotted Wing Drosophila presentation by David Handley, vegetable and small fruit specialist, University of Maine Cooperative Extension — Highmoor Farm and James Dill, pest management.

The Spotted Wing Drosophila (Drosophila suzukii) is a new pest and a concern for raspberries, blueberries, day neutral strawberries and many other soft fruits. This insect is a small fruit fly, similar to the type that fly around the over ripe bananas.

Growers and gardeners need to learn about this pest and develop strategies to manage it in their crops, as it appears it will be a future problem in Maine.
