It wasn’t unusual for the Colby men’s track team to have the winner in the 55-meter dash at Saturday’s Maine state meet. After all, Dom Kone has won a couple national championships.

But while Kone raced in the preliminaries Saturday, he skipped the finals. Colby freshman Ethan Druskat won with a time of 6.57 seconds.

“His high school PR in the 55 was 6.49, I think,” Colby coach Jared Beers said. “What he ran on Saturday was his third best time ever.”

Druskat went to Oyster River High School in Durham, N.H. A week before winning the 55 at the state meet, he was part of Colby’s winning 4×400 relay team at the University of Southern Maine Invitational.

“He was our top recruit last year, and it shows,” Beers said.

At the state meet, Colby finished fourth overall out of five schools.

“It was a good meet,” Beers said. “We were pretty dominated by the flu, unfortunately, so the meat of our middle distance squad didn’t run. We had a lot of season’s best, a few more New England qualifiers. In that regard, it was an outstanding meet.”

Colby has two meets scheduled this weekend before the New England Division III championships Feb. 15-16 at Bates. On Saturday, Colby is competing in the Valentine Classic at Boston University and the Tufts Invitational at Medford, Mass.

Beers said he will send anyone who is running around an oval to BU and the athletes competing in field events to Tufts.

“BU has arguably the fastest track in New England, maybe in the country,” Beers said.

Another Belgrade native, Teraysa White of the College of St. Scholastica, is among the top Division III goalies in the country for the women’s ice hockey team.

The NCAA has not provided any statistical reports for Division III women’s hockey this season. But if you go by last year’s final numbers, White’s current save percentage of .917 would rank her in the top 35. She has given up 45 goals this season while making 496 saves — nearly 25 per game. This weekend against the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, White made 27 saves in a 0-0 overtime tie for her third shutout of the season.
