I read with interest letters to the editor about guns, health care and other social issues confronting our nation today and can’t help but think of a quote that I believe applies.
In 1944, Norman Mattoon Thomas, a leading American socialist and six-time Socialist Party of America presidential candidate, said “The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of ‘liberalism,’ they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.”
He said he no longer needed to run as a presidential candidate for the Socialist Party because “the Democratic Party has adopted our platform.”
