Last month, the Morning Sentinel published a story about the accomplishments of the past year as outlined by Waterville’s mayor, Karen Heck.

Missing from her list was the opening of the new Mid-Maine Homeless Shelter in October. I believe this was a glaring, and unfortunate, omission.

The new shelter on Colby Street provides a home for 50 to 60 homeless men, women and children (including infants) each and every day during this cold winter, and throughout the year. In addition, the Shelter offers vital services to prevent homelessness, through programs at the Lunder Family Homeless Prevention Center.

Heck’s list was indeed impressive, but it was simply not long enough. Especially during this very cold time of year, we must not forget the most vulnerable in our community. May we be grateful that we have a shelter that is now large enough to serve so many, and thankful for the generosity of those who helped to make it happen.
