FARMINGTON — University of Maine at Farmington junior John Ochira was recently awarded a $1,000 scholarship by the Maine Higher Education Assistance Foundation.

A business economics major, Ochira was recommended for the award by UMF faculty based on his academic excellence and leadership on campus and in the community.

Ochira, from Sudan, moved to the Portland area in 2005 where he graduated from Deering High School.

Student scholarship recipients of the Maine Higher Education Assistance Foundation must be a Maine high school graduate majoring in a business-related area in their second, third or fourth year, and be in good academic standing.
