CANAAN — A customer at a Canaan store has claimed a winning $2 million Powerball ticket, Maine State Lottery officials announced Friday.
The ticket was sold Feb. 23 at Canaan Superette to James Lovell, an unemployed truck driver who is a regular Powerball player at the store, according to a Maine State Lottery news release.
His winning ticket matched the first five winning numbers, earning $1 million, but Lovell also bought the $1 Power Play option and doubled his winnings to $2 million.
Lovell said in the release that he hopes the fame from the ticket leads to a new driving job. He said he wants to work again, and his wife said she will continue with her job as a social worker.
He said in the news release that when he told his wife that he won, she said he must be joking.
Tom Ward, owner of Canaan Superette, said in the news release that he was excited that one of his regular players, a community member, had bought the winning ticket.
Lovell said he invested part of his winnings into trusts for his granddaughters, and he bought a new V-8 diesel truck.
