SKOWHEGAN — A woman and a young child were taken to a local hospital Thursday afternoon after their sport utility vehicle was struck, nearly head-on, by a tractor-trailer on U.S. Route 2, also known as Canaan Road.
The truck, an empty pulp truck registered to Phoenix Trucking, of Harmony, was traveling toward Canaan when it hit the late-model Dodge SUV, which was going toward downtown Skowhegan.
The victims’ relatives said the woman is Deborah Blanchet and the child is her granddaughter, Kaylee Blodgett, both of Canaan, but the relatives were uncertain about their injuries.
Blanchet and Blodgett were taken by ambulance to Redington-Fairview General Hospital to be checked, according to Officer Herb Oliver, of the Skowhegan police.
The crash sent both vehicles into a large snowbank, just short of a stand of trees.
The truck ended in a jackknifed position on the SUV’s side of the road.
The truck’s tires left skid marks on the road for about 100 feet, crossing the center line in front of the Somerset Woods rest area on the Kennebec River and the state Department of Transportation garage.
The pulp truck’s driver, who was not identified, was not injured. The front of his truck was heavily damaged. Air bags deployed inside the Dodge SUV.
