Motorist swerves to avoid deer, knocks out power in Augusta

AUGUSTA — A Spring Road crash Thursday night reportedly knocked out power to parts of the city.

Augusta Police Sgt. Christopher Shaw said the crash occurred around 6:55 p.m. when Bruce Morgan, 47, of Augusta, saw a deer run onto the road. Morgan swerved his 2001 Toyota Tundra to the right to avoid the deer and went into a ditch where he hit a utility pole. The impact split the pole in two, Shaw said.

No injuries were reported, but Shaw said the crash interrupted power to parts of the city. Shaw was unsure how many customers were affected or for how long. The Central Maine Power website indicated at the time of the outage that several streets were affected for about 90 minutes. CMP officials did not return a message Friday seeking comment.

There are no charges associated with the crash, police said.
