Augusta’s best-kept secret is the upcoming meeting for public input and questions regarding the 2013-14 Augusta School budget.
I have been trying since March 11 to have the budget and hearing information available to the public, to give residents an opportunity to respond.
I suggested notifying the public about tonight’s meeting by using the Kennebec Journal, sending fliers home with school children, using Channel 7 and posting on the school website.
As of this writing, none of these things has happened. I suspect now very few taxpayers will attend tonight’s meeting.
The Augusta Board of Education has some wonderful new members and members serving near the end of terms who have been involved, and I am encouraged by this. I think more could have been done to alert and include the public about the budget and meeting. Taxpayers spending more than $27 million for educating Augusta’s kids should have a chance to state their views.
