AUGUSTA — Ireneé “Rene” and Madeline (Pepin) Patenaude of Augusta recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

They were married at St. Augustine’s Church in Augusta on March 9, 1943, by Reverend Gerard Patenaude, Rene’s brother.

After serving in the Navy on the USS Raleigh during World War II as an aerologist (weatherman), Rene and Madeline owned and operated Patenaude’s Superette in Augusta from 1946 until his retirement in 1977. They also spent summers in Rockwood, in the Moosehead Lake Region, where they enjoyed their retirement fishing and spending time with family and friends.

They have eight children: David, Todd and George of Augusta, Dominic, Thomas and Elizabeth of Sidney, Denis of Belgrade and Dorothy of Waterville. They also have 20 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Family gathered in Gardiner to celebrate and share memories of 70 years together.
