AUGUSTA — A Manchester man died Tuesday when the car he was driving crashed into a tree near Western Avenue.

Patrick Culleton, 21, died at the scene of the crash, said Augusta police Deputy Chief Jared Mills.

Culleton was alone in the car.

The crash occurred around 6 p.m., near the Brann Avenue intersection, as Culleton drove west toward Manchester. Mills said early reports claimed the car was traveling at a high rate of speed and swerved right to avoid traffic that was stopped near the point where the two westbound lanes converge into one. The car left the road and hit a tree about 10 feet off the road.

The car was covered with a red tarp for about two hours as police investigated. Maine State Police were called to reconstruct the crash, Mills said.

Western Avenue remained open, though traffic moved slowly near the accident site.
