Fire crews battle blaze at Athens pellet company

ATHENS — A fire at the production facility for Maine Woods Pellet Company in Athens drew firefighters from four area fire departments on Wednesday morning.

No serious damage occurred and no one was injured in the fire, which appears to have started when wood debris collected around a piece of machinery, said Athens Fire Chief Travis Thompson.

He said it is not unusual for such fires to break out in wood pellet factories.

Firefighters from Athens, Cornville, Harmony and Madison responded.

ROME — A local man has been charged after he reportedly choked a woman in front of her son.

Dustin Sprague, 27, was arrested Tuesday night and charged with domestic aggravated assault, said Sgt. Aaron Hayden of the Maine State Police.

The 28-year-old woman met state police around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Fairfield Police Department. She told troopers that she and Sprague had fought about their prescriptions Tuesday morning.

“She stated that Sprague had (choked) her during the altercation twice that morning and hit her several times with a blunt object,” Hayden said.

The woman said Sprague stopped her when she tried to call 911.

“The victim’s 9 year-old son was also present during the assault,” Hayden said.
