ORONO — The University of Maine has established a seven-member search committee to help select the school’s next men’s ice hockey coach.

Tim Whitehead was fired on April 9 after 12 years. Bob Corkum was named the program’s interim head coach.

The committee will be chaired by Dr. George Jacobson, a professor emeritus of biology, ecology and  climate change at the university. He has served on several search committees through the years.

He will be joined by Cherie Damon (president of Friends of Maine Hockey), Nic Erhardt (the school’s faculty liaison to the hockey team), Peter Metcalf (former UMaine player), Richard Powell (associate professor of political science), Jon Sorenson (UMaine alum, cconomics 1986) and Janine Tremble (president elect of Black Bear Board of Advisors).

The search committee will begin work immediately and hopes to come up with the names of candidates within two months.
