FAIRFIELD — Sonja Morse struck out 13 and allowed just three hits to lead the defending Class A state champion Cony softball team past Lawrence 10-1 in the season opener for both teams Wednesday afternoon.

Molly Russell singled twice and belted a two-run homer in the fifth inning for Cony. Olivia Deeves and Arika Brochu added two hits apiece.

Abby King hit a solo home run in the fourth for Lawrence.

Gardiner 10, Lincoln 1: Kristal Smith pitched a three-hitter and collected three base hits to lead the host Tigers to a Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B win in the season opener for both teams.

Smith struck out 10 batters and walked two while also delivering a pair of RBIs. Kylee Granholm double, singled twice and drove in three runs while teammate Taylor Banister singled, doubled and drove in a run. Hayden Campbell doubled for the Eagles.

Bangor 5, Erskine 0: Skylar Cassum had three singles and pitched four scoreless innings to lead the Rams to the KVAC A win in Bangor.

Sydni Cosgrove and Emily Reilly each had a pair of singles for Bangor (1-0).

Taylor Bouchard and Alyssa Gartley each had two singles for the Eagles (0-1).

Maranacook 14, Morse 3, 5 innings: Lindsay Jackson and Mariah Vining each drove in a pair of runs to support a strong outing from winning pitcher Ashley Belanger.

Belanger allowed just three hits and no earned runs. She also had two singles.

Elise Linton had three hits for the Black Bears (1-0) as well.

Messalonskee 6, Edward Little 1: Kassi Michaud allowed three hits over six innings as the Eagles defeated the Red Eddies in Auburn in the season opener for both teams.

Michaud walked one and struck out seven. She also hit two singles. Teammate Kylee Knight added two singles for the Eagles.

Messalonskee led 2-1 after six innings, but broke things open with four runs in the top of the seventh. Jordan Roy pitched a scoreless seventh for the Eagles.

Baseball

Bangor 12, Erskine 2, 6 innings: The Rams collected 12 hits en route to a KVAC A win.

Tyler LaPlante led the attack with a triple and single followed by Hunter Boyce with a double and single and Parker Sanderson and Sam Stanhpe with two singles apiece.

Winning pitcher Greg Duff went the distance, striking out four and walking three. Josh Bailey had a two-run double for Erskine.

Morse 10, Maranacook 5: The Shipbuilders scored seven unearned runs in the top of the sixth to snap a 3-3 game and beat the Black Bears in Readfield.

Paul Whalen scored had two singles and a double for the Shipbuilders (1-0).

Tucker Whitman and Cam Brochu each had two singles to pace Maranacook (0-1).

Messalonskee 7, Edward Little 3: Ben Frazee drove in three runs, and Jared Cunningham hit a two-run double to lift the defending Class A state champions to the win in Auburn.

Jake Dexter also had a pair of hits for Messalonskee (1-0). Patrick Breton earned the win.

Lew Jensen, Matt Hammond and John Simpson each had a pair of hits for Edward Little (0-1).

Boys lacrosse

Messalonskee 10, Mt. Ararat 6: Ben Weeks scored seven goals and Aidan Calkins added a pair to lead Messalonskee to the KVAC A win in Topsham.

Josh Towle also scored for Messalonskee (2-0). James Varney had three assists and Jake Smith made 12 saves to earn the victory.

Nick Dow had two goals to lead Mt. Ararat (0-1).
