ST. ALBANS — An 18-year-old St. Albans man died after the car he was driving struck a tree early Friday morning on Mountain View Road.

Austin E. Field was driving south in a 2009 black Honda Accord when the car left the road and hit the tree about 2 a.m. Friday, according to police.

Speed and alcohol appear to have been factors in the accident, according to a news release from Detective Lt. Carl Gottardi of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department.

A passer-by saw the car and called 911, Gottardi said. He said Field was dead at the scene. His dog was also in the car and died while being taken to a veterinarian clinic, Gottardi said.

Field was the son of Melanie Hodgkins and Robert Field.

The Somerset County Sheriff’s Department, the St. Albans Fire Department, St. Albans animal control and EMS Ambulance Service were at the accident scene.
