WINSLOW — Police charged a 32-year-old Winslow man Monday with five counts of unlawful trafficking in drugs, just eight days before he was scheduled to appear in court on 10 counts of unlawful drug possession.
Casey Bellows was arrested about 3:15 a.m. Monday during a motor vehicle stop on Benton Avenue.
Winslow police Chief Jeff Fenlason said Officer Brandon Lund recognized Bellows’ car as it drove by and pulled him over.
Lund knew that Bellows was subject to bail conditions, and “one of the bail conditions is that you must submit to a search,” Fenlason said.
During a search of Bellows’ car, Lund found what police now believe is 3 grams of cocaine. Some was a powder, some had been compressed into a tablet form, and some had been cooked into the hard crystalline form known as crack cocaine, Fenlason said.
He said Lund also found five strips of suboxone, an opioid commonly used to treat opioid addiction; about 30 tablets of the stimulant Ritalin; a crack pipe; a digital scale; and baggies, wrappers and other types of packaging.
Bellows already was scheduled to appear May 7 in Waterville District Court on charges related to his arrest March 14 at his South Pond Road home. That night, police holding a no-knock search warrant stormed Bellows’ home and confiscated crack cocaine, cash and hundreds of pills from the residence, according to Winslow police Lt. Josh Veilleux.
Bellows now also has been charged with five counts of unlawful trafficking in a scheduled W drug, violating a condition of release, and sale and use of drug paraphernalia.
Under Maine Law, trafficking in a scheduled W drug is a class B crime, which carries a penalty of up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.
Fenlason said Bellows is being held on $17,000 cash bail and is scheduled to appear before a judge Tuesday for an arraignment before a June 25 court date in Kennebec County Superior Court.
