BRUSLY, La. — About 15 people are recovering after a staircase collapsed during filming of a TV miniseries at the Cinclare Sugar Mill Historic District just north of Brusly.

A spokesman for the West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office told The Advocate crews were filming a scene for “Bonnie and Clyde,” a miniseries about the notorious bandits, shortly after midnight Saturday when the wooden staircase gave way.

Col. Richie Johnson said about 15 people were hurt. Two were transported by Acadian Ambulance to area hospitals for treatment of minor injuries. Johnson says the rest were treated at the scene.

It’s unclear why the staircase gave way. An investigation is under way.

Liza Kelso, interim executive director of the Baton Rouge Film Commission, said production has not been halted and filming will continue Monday.

Sony Entertainment is filming the miniseries, directed by Bruce Beresford, around Baton Rouge and East and West Feliciana parishes, Kelso has said. Beresford also directed the Oscar-winning film, “Driving Miss Daisy.”

The series is set to air on both the History Channel and Lifetime later this year, she said.

The accident happened as filming took place in a studio at the Cinclare Sugar Mill Historic District just north of Brusly on the west bank of the Mississippi River, Johnson said.

The land that makes up the historical district produced sugar cane as far back as 1803. It was consolidated into one property in 1855 and renamed Marengo Plantation.

In May 1878, Cincinnati investor James H. Laws purchased the land and renamed it Cinclare Plantation after Cinclare Keever, one of his business partners.
