WATERVILLE — Jon Hayes, a former assistant coach at the Thomas College and the University of Maine at Farmington, has been named the head men’s basketball coach at Thomas.

Hayes, who served as an assistant for the Terriers last season, takes over for T.J. Maines, who resigned recently to take the boys basketball coaching job at Cony High School.

Hayes, a UMF and Mt. Blue High School graduate, coached as an assistant for five seasons under Dick Meader and later served as an assistant coach at the University of Maine. He went on to serve as the head coach for three seasons at the University of New England.

“We are very excited to have Jon become the head men’s basketball caoch at Thomas College,” Thomas athletic director David Roussel said in a statement. “Coach Hayes has a strong passion and love for the Thomas program, and we look forward to his tenure as our men’s basketball coach.”

Hayes joined Thomas as an assistant prior to the 2010-11 season.
