FORT BENNING, Ga. — Members of the Maine Army National Guard recently particapted in the 2013 U.S. Army Small Arms Championships in Fort Benning.

The team received first place finishes as the overall team rifle and overall team pistol champions and a second place team finish in the Combined Arms (multi-gun) match, and received a second place overall team championship finish. Throughout the entire event, the Maine Army National Guard never received less than a second place finish as a team.

Participating were Sgt. 1st Class Bruce Roscoe of Waterville; Staff Sgts. Joshua Holmes of Lisbon Falls, Kyle Bartman of Canaan, Timothy Gallagher of Glenburn; and Spc. Nicholas Girardin of Whitefield.

In addition to the team finishes, Maine Army National Guard soldiers received two first place, four second place and three third place individual finishes.

Girardin, first place overall novice competitor, was awarded a commemorative M-1 Garand Battle Rifle.

The soldiers competed against 255 competitors from the Army National Guard, Active Army, Army Reserve and ROTC.

Paulin graduates

FORT BENNING, Ga. — Army Pfc. Cody M. Paulin recently graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga.

Paulin is the son of Cameron and Alexandra Paulin of St. Petersburg, Fla. He is a 2012 graduate of Cony High School, Augusta.

SAN ANTONIO — Air Force Airman Ashley M. Cooper recently graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio.

Cooper completed an eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Cooper is the daughter of Heather Young of Augusta, Maine, and granddaughter of Charlene Cooper of Bloomington, Ind. She is a 2012 graduate of Edgewood High School, Ellettsville, Ind.

Phelps graduates

from Navy school

GOOSE CREEK, S.C. — Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Brian A. Phelps has graduated from the U.S. Navy’s Nuclear Power School at Naval Nuclear Power Training Command in Goose Creek.

During the six-month course, Phelps received training in the design, operation, and maintenance of naval nuclear propulsion plants.

Phelps is a 2006 graduate of Cony High School, Augusta, Maine. He received a bachelor’s degree in 2010 from Wells College, Aurora, N.Y.
