Rollover accident injures driver, 83
WINTHROP — An Augusta man was hurt Saturday after his sport-utility vehicle veered into a ditch and rolled over several times.
Sylvester E. Cobbs, 83, was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with unspecified injuries, said Chief Joseph Young of the Winthrop police.
A hospital spokeswoman did not return a call Tuesday seeking an update on Cobbs’ condition.
Young said Cobbs was driving his 2003 Ford SUV south on Route 135 around 4 p.m. when the vehicle veered right onto a soft shoulder near the YMCA Camp of Maine. Cobbs tried to steer back onto the road and overcorrected, causing the car to roll, Young said.
Winthrop Fire Chief Dan Brooks said shortly after the crash that the ditch had been excavated recently and is deep. Rescue workers had to remove Cobbs from the vehicle by popping the rear hatch, Brooks said.
Young said no charges are pending in connection with the crash.
