LITCHFIELD — Investigators say they will likely never know what sparked a fire that destroyed a Hallowell-Litchfield Road home last week.

Sgt. Ken Grimes of the State Fire Marshal’s Office said Monday that heavy damage made it impossible to determine what caused Friday’s fire, which destroyed the barn and home at 1838 Hallowell-Litchfield Road owned by David and Robin Cummings.

“The origin is out in the barn area,” Grimes said. “There’s nothing to indicate it was anything other than an accidental fire.”

The fire, which broke out around 3 p.m., caused no injuries. Tom Bureau, a friend of the homeowners, said the structure had undergone renovation recently. Firefighters from several communities responded. Litchfield firefighters who responded to the blaze could not be reached for comment Friday night.
