Cony High School senior Sonja Morse was selected the 2013 Gatorade Maine Softball Player of the Year, the company announced Thursday. The award recognizes athletic achievement along with standards of academic achievement and character on and off the field.

The pitcher/shortstop led the Rams to a 15-1 regular-season record, finishing with an 11-0 record, an 0.58 earned run average and 130 strikeouts in 63 1/3 innings. A 2012 first team all-state selection, Morse batted .549 with six home runs and 26 RBIs.

“It was a special year for her,” Cony coach Rocky Gaslin said. “She’s fun to coach and she responds. She’s a special player.”

Added Oxford Hills coach Cindy Goddard: “She is by far the best pitcher in our league and she can also hit and field as well as anyone I have seen.”

Morse maintained a 90.1 average in the classroom and earned highest marks at the Capital Area Technical Center’s law enforcement class. She has signed a letter of intent to play softball on an athletic scholarship at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell.
