Some politicians are saying that the state cannot afford to support communities via revenue sharing, and that the communities should learn to live with fewer services (in Europe, they call this austerity).
Maybe they are right. Let’s try it! Have all the towns and cities in Maine cut a quarter or a third of their personnel and see what happens.
The Europeans are not happy with their austerity, but we Americans are a tougher bunch, right?
We can live without our libraries, with weeds growing in the parks, with reduced police presence, right?
Sure we can!
