GARDINER — Two men were injured in an assault involving a baseball bat early Saturday on Harrison Avenue.

Gardiner Police Chief James Toman said the two were taken by Gardiner Rescue to MaineGeneral Medical Center with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.

Toman said the incident, reported to police at 1:25 a.m., began as a verbal assault between two men that escalated to a physical altercation and involved a group of people.

“The baseball bat was used against one or both victims,” Toman said on Monday.

The incident remains under investigation.
