AUGUSTA — A city man with a long rap sheet was arrested on the roof of an apartment building Friday after police said he broke into a woman’s apartment and assaulted her.

Gary S. Wallace, 46, of Augusta, was arrested on charges of domestic violence assault, domestic violence terrorizing, criminal mischief, burglary and refusing to submit to arrest at an apartment building on Cedar Street.

Augusta Deputy Police Chief Jared Mills said that after Wallace threatened a woman he has had a relationship with, he broke into her unit and assaulted her before fleeing as police arrived.

“When we went to locate him, he had climbed up into a tree and onto a roof,” Mills said.

Mills said police were sent onto the roof first, where they caught Wallace.

The Augusta Fire Department responded with trucks that got Wallace and police down from the roof, he said. The woman was still inside the apartment and she didn’t need medical attention, Mills said.

Wallace has had many run-ins with police, including multiple incidents on Cedar Street.

In June 2012, he was sentenced to 180 days in jail with all but seven days suspended after a March 5 incident in Gardiner when police said he was found operating a vehicle while intoxicated and with a suspended or revoked license.

In August, he was arrested on a probation hold after police responded to a report of disorderly conduct on Cedar Street.

In December, he was sentenced to four months in jail for a domestic-violence assault in Augusta. In February, he was arrested again on charges of violating probation and refusing to submit to arrest or detention by police after a report of disorderly conduct on Cedar Street.
