AUGUSTA — A Waterville man was taken to the hospital after a crash that snarled traffic on Western Avenue Monday evening.

Derek Auger, 24, was taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta to be treated for head and mouth injuries after hitting his head on the windshield and steering wheel, said Augusta Police Sgt. Christopher Shaw. None of the injuries were believed to be life threatening.

The crash occurred around 5:50 p.m., as Auger was driving his Pontiac Grand Am west on Western Avenue. A 1994 Dodge Spirit, being driven by 45-year-old Tammy Harris of Readfield, stopped in traffic in front of Auger, who was unable to stop his car before it hit the Spirit from behind, Shaw said. Auger told police he failed to notice the stopped car because he looked down briefly while driving.

The crash slowed traffic on the busy road for some time. Eastbound drivers were diverted around the crash through the CCI Solutions parking lot. Westbound drivers were diverted into the eastbound lane.
