AUGUSTA — Jacob Hendsbee hit a two-run triple and Nate Howard pitched a complete game shutout as Augusta beat Auburn 3-0 on the first day of the 13-year-old Babe Ruth baseball state tournament Friday.

Augusta advances to play Central Maine, which beat Apple Valley 13-6 in the second game Friday, at 4 p.m. today at Morton Field. Auburn plays Apple Valley in an elimination game at 5 p.m. at McGuire Field.

Ryan Kappleman had two singles for Auburn.

Central Maine 13, Apple Valley 6: Cody Pellerin and Tyler Lewis each had two hits and two RBIs as Central Maine won its opener.

Josh Dow added a triple, a double, a single and an RBI for Central Maine, while Jacob Dacus also had two singles.

Bryce Hudson had three singles and an RBI for Apple Valley. Dan Garrand and Antonio Meucci each added two singles.
