AUGUSTA — Kennebec Behavioral Health awarded its James R. Schmidt Award to the manager of Cross Cafe at its 53rd annual meeting.

Richard Desjardins, manager of the cafeteria in the Cross Office Building, behind the State House, was chosen as the award recipient for providing a safe environment for people with mental illnesses to work, according to a news release from the Maine Department of Labor.

Desjardins employs members of Capitol Clubhouse, an Augusta-based nonprofit managed by Kennebec Behavioral Health that helps improve the quality of life for adults who experience mental illness by providing social, educational and employment opportunities, according to the release.

The James R. Schmidt award is presented to people who exemplify Schmidt’s efforts to improve the quality of life for adults with mental illness. Kathy Reardon, director of Capitol Clubhouse, presented the award to Desjardins.
