WESTFIELD, Mass. — Connor Garland’s bases loaded single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the Central Maine Babe Ruth 14-year-old All-Stars an 8-7 win over Norwood, Mass. on the opening day of the New England tournament.

Central Maine trailed 7-6 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, and tied the game on a bases loaded walk.

“We trailed the entire game, but having the guys keep their heads in it, having good at bats, that kept us in it,” Central Maine coach Tom Bell said.

Central Maine trailed 7-4 going into the bottom of the sixth, before scoring a pair of runs on an error. In the seventh, Brandon Nale walked to plate the tying run before Garland’s game-winning single.
Ben Smith had four hits for Central Maine, and Nale had a pair of hits.

Dalton Wood pitched two innings of relief for the win. Garland started for Central Maine and pitched five innings, allowing three earned runs.

Paul Galvin had three hits for Norwood, and Jovan Gomes scored a pair of runs.

Central Maine will play Pittsfield, Mass., tonight at 7 p.m.
