WESTFIELD, Mass. — The Pittsfield, Mass. All-Stars scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break open a close game and take a 10-3 win over Central Maine at the New England Babe Ruth 14-year old tournament.

Central Maine plays Manchester, N.H. at 1 p.m. today on the final day of the round robin portion of the tournament. If Central Maine wins, it advances to the championship round. Central Maine can still advance with a loss, depending on tiebreakers.

“It’s gut check time. That’s our first loss of the season,” Central Maine coach Tom Bell said.

Central Maine scored all three runs in the third inning.

“We couldn’t put any more on the board after that,” Bell said.

Brandon Nale doubled for Central Maine, while Ben Smith and Colby Lawrence each singled.

New England 13-Year Old Babe Ruth

Westfield, Mass. 13, Central Maine 3, 5 innings: In the opening round of the New England 13-year olds Babe Ruth baseball tournament, Central Maine had just three hits, losing in Manchester, N.H.
Central Maine scored a pair of runs in the first inning, but Westfield took control of the game with a big second inning.

“They hit the ball. That’s a good hitting team,” Central Maine assistant coach Scott Ballard said.Central Maine will face Bedford, N.H. in an elimination game at 10 a.m. today.

Junior Legion

Fairfield 7, Biddeford 2:  Cody Martin pitched a one-hitter and struck out 13 to lead Fairfield past Biddeford in Junior American Legion playoff action in Fairfield.

Martin lost his no-hiiter when Sam Collins singled in the seventh inning.
Spencer Folsom led Post 14 hitters with three singles and an RBI while Adam Littlefield singled twice and drove in a run.

The teams continue their best-of-three series today in Biddeford.
