WESTBROOK — The Chief Medical Examiner’s office conducted an autopsy Tuesday on a 2-year-old girl who was found dead Monday morning in the playpen where she slept, according to the Maine Department of Public Safety.

A report on the autopsy will be issued in several months, pending the results of further study, including toxicology and other tests, an office spokeswoman said.

Madelyn Negron lived with her parents, Jessica Joy and Raul Negron, at 10 Cross St., where she was last seen alive when she was put to bed in the playpen Sunday night, said Stephen McCausland, department spokesman.

The child had no marks, injuries or other immediate indication of trauma or foul play, McCausland said.

“It didn’t appear to have anything to do with the child being allowed to sleep in the playpen or because of a defect in the playpen,” McCausland said.

It’s unknown whether the child had an illness or whether bedding may have played a role in the child’s death, McCausland said.

“We’re looking to the medical examiner for a cause,” McCausland said.

State and Westbrook police are investigating the child’s death. State police investigate all deaths of children under age 3. The parents are cooperating and there is no record of abuse of the child, McCausland said.

Police don’t normally announce investigations into such deaths unless someone is charged with responsibility, but the agencies issued a news release after several neighbors and reporters called for information, McCausland said.
