District Game Warden Steve Allarie carries an eaglet today, that he captured on the banks of the Kennebec River in Chelsea.

The bird was spotted over the last two weeks walking through yards along the Kennebec River in Hallowell before perching on a picnic table overnight in Hallowell, warranting a call to wildlife law enforcement.

Allarie collected the malnourished raptor after a brief foot chase and canoed the animal across the river to Hallowell, where a volunteer from Avian Haven, of Freedom, collected it.

After a thorough evaluation, the eaglet is expected to be rehabilitated at Avian Haven before being released back into the wild.

The bird probably fledged too early, Allarie said, and was unable to provide for itself in the wild.
