NEWTOWN, Conn. — The run is over for Central Maine.

Scott Creedon pitched a complete game and Sean Casey went 3 for 4 to lead Braintree, Mass. over Central Maine 6-1 in an elimination game at the 15-year-old Babe Ruth regionals Wednesday afternoon.

“It was an awesome run,” Central Maine coach Butch Cunningham said. “Being a little team from central Maine, to go up against a Braintree, we have nothing to hang our heads about. We went out and we battled. We did all we could do.”

Central Maine won its first two games of the tournament but then dropped tough decisions on consecutive days to bow out of the tournament.

Braintree, which lost a 3-2 decision to Central Maine earlier in the tournament, scored two in the top of the first and led 3-0 before Central Maine got on the board in the third inning.

Derek Bowen had an RBI single in the bottom of the third for Central Maine. Trevor Gettig and Jared Cunningham singled to spark the rally.

Central Maine loaded the bases with one out in the third but could only push across the one run.

“We just didn’t get the timely hit,” Butch Cunningham said. “It just didn’t happen (Wednesday). Braintree got the timely hits and we didn’t. It’s baseball. It happens.”

Jared Cunningham went 3 for 4 and Gettig went 2 for 3 to lead Central Maine, which used three different pitchers.

Creedon struck out two and allowed nine hits to earn the victory for Braintree (3-1), which will need to beat Cranston, R.I. (3-0) twice to win the regional and advance to next week’s World Series.
