AUBURN — Bryant University sophomore Joe Walp and Matt Greenleaf of Sable Oaks each won a pair of matches Wednesday to advance to the finals of the Maine State Golf Association’s Match Play championships. They’ll square off for 18 holes this morning at Fox Ridge Golf Club to determine a winner.

Walp, who plays out of Falmouth Country Club, shared the Class A individual schoolboy title two years ago while a senior at Deering High School. He knocked off Portland’s Jack Wyman, 5 and 4, in the morning round before beating Maranacook High School senior Luke Ruffing 3 and 2 in the afternoon. Ruffing advanced to the semifinals after dispatching Class B schoolboy champ Reese McFarlane of Cape Elizabeth, 3 and 2, in the quarterfinals.

Greenleaf, who was runner-up to Ryan Gay in the match play finals two years ago, topped fellow Sable Oaks golfer Mike Doran, 1-up, in the morning round, then beat Joe Alvarez of Penobscot Valley, 2-up, in the semifinals. Alvarez knocked off Maine Amateur champion Ricky Jones of Thomaston, 1-up, in the morning round.
