PORTLAND — Maine Knights of Columbus have donated $20,000 to both St. John Regional Catholic School in Winslow and Mount Merici Academy in Waterville.

The $40,000 total came from the sale of a building owned by Maine Knights of Columbus Council 148 in Waterville.

“The $20,000 from the former St. Francis Chapter of Knights will be used for tuition assistance,” said Claudette Massey, principal at St. John Regional Catholic School. “It is a substantial donation and will be a huge boost for this fund. Tuition assistance can make a difference in a child actually attending our school, as some families simply do not have the resources.”

“The Mount Merici Academy community is extremely grateful for the generous donation of $20,000 to the scholarship fund,” said Susan Cote, principal at Mount Merici Academy. “The donation will extend our outreach effort providing children in our area with an opportunity to be nurtured in a Christ-centered learning environment. Mount Merici Academy is blessed to be part of a supportive parish faith community!”

Local chapters of the Knights of Columbus have been committed to helping Maine Catholic schools in various capacities.

“They have an ongoing presence and are instrumental in assisting with countless projects,” added Massey. “Many times, they just appear on our doorstep ready to help with whatever needs to be done.”

Maine Catholic school administrators and teachers partner with parents, parishioners and community members to provide students with opportunities to become creative and critical thinkers and confident contributors to Church and society, according to a release.
