AUGUSTA — Maine higher education and businesses leaders are urging the Democratic-controlled Legislature to approve a state borrowing package this week.

Representatives from the University of Maine System and Maine State Chamber of Commerce were joined by Democratic Senate President Justin Alfond of Portland and House Speaker Mark Eves of North Berwick at the Kennebec Valley Community College on Wednesday.

Maine lawmakers return to Augusta on Thursday to vote on a $149.5 million borrowing package that includes investments for roads and higher education. The proposal was worked out by Republican Gov. Paul LePage and Democratic leadership and is expected to receive the two-thirds support needed for approval.

The president of Central Maine Community College said the bonds will allow the college to expand and meet the demand for skilled workers.
