AUGUSTA — A jury late Thursday cleared Todd L. Overlock, 30, of Vassalboro, of a charge of domestic violence assault.

The jury in Kennebec County Superior Court deliberated about three hours before returning a verdict of not guilty.

“Todd and I were both extremely pleased with the jury’s verdict,” said Overlock’s attorney, James Billings. “He is relieved and looks forward to being reunited with his son. We were both surprised this case went as far as it did since (the woman listed as the victim) lost her bid for a protective order back in May.”

The woman testified at the trial, said Assistant District Attorney David Spencer.

“We were disappointed and thought the evidence was sufficient to prove Mr. Overlock had committed the assault,” Spencer said Friday. “But we have to accept and respect the decision of the jury.”

Overlock had been charged with the offense following an incident May 4 in Vassalboro.

Overlock previously was convicted of domestic violence assault Jan. 11, 2010.
