Shelter welcomes donations for benefit

WATERVILLE — The Mid-Maine Homeless Shelter is accepting donations for its upcoming indoor benefit sale at the Pleasant Street Church, 61 Pleasant St.. Donations may be dropped off between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. or from 5 to 8 p.m. today.

Lopes, of Waterville, receives award

BAR HARBOR — Olivia Lopes, a senior at Waterville High School, received an award for the best presentation by a high school student on July 30 at the Student Symposium at the Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory. Lopes is one of 37 high school and college students conducting research at laboratory this summer. She is the daughter of Tiffany and Joe Lopes, of Waterville.

Summit Natural Gas right for the community

As a longtime Augusta resident, I’m excited that our community will soon have access to natural gas. This means many families, homeowners and businesses will be able to reduce their energy costs and provide an economic boost for our local economy. Recently, the city decided to select Summit Natural Gas of Maine to provide natural gas for city buildings and local schools, a decision that will lead to an annual savings of more than $600,000.

Natural gas story raises questions

The Aug. 11 story by Michael Shepherd about natural gas availability for homes and business in Augusta and other areas (“Central Maine natural gas options confront consumers”) is the best-written description of this topic that I have seen. However, I have two questions.
