AUGUSTA — The Cony football program has come far enough that even blowout wins receive critical examination.

That was the case Saturday as the Rams rolled past Brewer 52-12 yet weren’t satisfied with their performance.

“I thought we definitely have some spots that we need to improve on,” senior quarterback Ben Lucas said. “Obviously winning 52-12 is nice, but there’s a lot of things we have to work on. We have to have a very good week of practice. Brunswick (Friday’s  opponent) is a very tough team.”

Lucas left after the first series of the third quarter with his team up 45-6. The big senior completed 13 of 21 passes with one interception for 239 yards and four touchdowns. The Rams (2-0) dominated the first half, registering two safeties while holding the Witches (0-2) to two first downs, both via penalties.

Defensive ends Charlie Hallak and Alex Neill teamed up to tackle Brewer’s Matt Crockett in the end zone to make it 9-0. On Cony’s next play from scrimmage, Lucas hit Hallak in the left flat and the senior ran the ball in from 30 yards out for the score. Hallak also rushed the ball three times for 36 yards and was the team’s standout on defense, where he was in on a dozen tackles and registered two sacks. A year ago, he started at safety.

“It doesn’t really matter to me,” Hallak said.

“Wherever the coaches need me, I’ll be there.”

Sophomore Reid Shostak scored three times on short runs while junior Tayler Carrier caught five balls for 88 yards and two touchdowns. Carrier and Lucas improvised on three or four plays after Lucas was flushed from the pocket.

“Whenever I see him scrambling I always come back to the ball,” Carrier said. “It’s easier to throw to a shorter target.”

Carrier made an exception to that rule late in the half when he slipped behind the defense on fourth-and-24 and made a sparkling TD catch of 30 yards in the right corner of the end zone.

“(The defender) came up and I just decided to break it downfield, and he threw a good ball,” Carrier said.

Lucas also completed a scoring pass to first-year senior Mitchell Bonenfant of 24 yards in the first half as the Rams took a 38-0 lead to the locker room. Cony coach Robby Vachon substituted in the second half and the Witches took advantage as sophomore quarterback Logan Rogerson scored on a 5-yard run in the third quarter and threw a scoring pass of 9 yards to tight end Tyler Davis in the fourth.

Cony backup quarterback Mitchell Caron completed 3 of 4 passes for 61 yards in the second half that led to a 10-yard scoring run from Shostak.

“Anytime you win 52-12 and you’re not feeling good about the win, there’s some room for improvement,” Vachon said. “We’ve got some work to do this week to get ready for a very good Brunswick team.”
